Violinist Harry Bennetts and pianist Vatche Jambazian are long-time collaborators, united by their boundless musical curiosity and infectious joy in performance. Sparks fly when they come together onstage, sure to be the case when they team up once again for this Sydney Morning Masters concert. At the heart of the program is a favourite work of Bennett’s, the Strauss Violin Sonata in E Flat Major. Written when the composer was just 23, it represents Strauss’ final foray into chamber music and foreshadows his whole-hearted embrace of the tone poem. An ardent, lush work that captures the heart, it is symphonic both in scope and texture. Equally passionate is Messiaen’s Thème et variations, written as gift for the composer’s first wife on the occasion of their wedding day. It’s programmed alongside Schubert’s Violin Sonata in D, modelled after the sonatas of Mozart and possessing that composer’s characteristic ability to balance joy and sophistication.
