For the first time in Sydney and for one show only, Tarab Ensemble is presenting its unique blend of several styles of the music of the Arab world, poetry recitals, calligraphy and storytelling.

Unveiling the treasures of the music of the Arab world, "In the Presence of Absence" is a 2-hr concert (with a break) of a variety of Arabic music styles as an artistic response to tumultuous times. Through a vibrant tapestry of Arab musical styles (including Andalusi Muwashah, Syrian Qudoud, 20th Century Classics, Longa, Sufi and more), Tarab Ensemble's performances are a testament to the power of classical Arabic music in defying time and space while fostering empathy, hope, beauty and unity.

The concert will also include poetry recitals in Arabic and English, as well as screening of Arabic calligraphy in motion by the Paris-based Palestinian artist Ahmad Dari

About Tarab Ensemble

Founded in 2019 by Palestinian-Australian musician and intellectual Yousef Alreemawi, Tarab Ensemble draws inspiration from the captivating concept of Tarab and the deeply expressive traditions of classical Arabic music. The ensemble initially united multi-faith, Arabic-speaking musicians from Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Egypt, addressing the under-representation of this rich musical heritage in Victoria. Tarab has since expanded, bringing together musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds from Australia, Armenia, Japan, Turkey and Iran. Honouring both tradition and innovation, each of our members bring their own unique expertise – highlighting the richness of music of the Arab World, including that of non-Arab origins. Tarab Ensemble has performed on stages of prestigious theatres in Melbourne such as Melbourne Recital Centre and Darebin Arts Centre, and in regional Victoria such as Wendouree Centre for the Performing Arts in Ballarat.

Today, thanks to the talent and tireless efforts of its members, Tarab Ensemble has evolved to become Australia’s leading music group totally dedicated to instrumental classical Arabic music. But don’t forget… with a twist!
